Turbine Pump is a specialized centrifugal pump which is designed to move water from a well or reservoir that is deep underground. This is also known as deep well turbine pump or a line shaft turbine pump; it is one of two main types of turbine pumps.
The other two main types of turbine pumps are vertical turbine pumps and submersible turbine pumps. Submersible pump has the electric motor located underwater at the bottom of the pump and vertical turbine pumps have the motor located above ground which is connected via a long vertical shaft to impellers at the bottom of the pump. The term “turbine” is the pump name is a misnomer; as such type of pump has nothing to do with the turbine.
Turbine pumps are basically drawn by an AC electric induction motor or by diesel engine through a right angle drive. The pump then end consists of at least one rotating impeller which is basically attached to a shaft and directs the well water into a diffuser casing called bowl. Multi-stage configurations are being used in multiple impellers on the same shaft to create a higher pressure that would be needed for deeper wells or higher required pressure head at the ground level.
Now if we talk about vertical turbine pump, it will work when water enters the pump at the bottom through a bell shaped part called the suction bell. After that it will move into the first stage impeller which raises the velocity of water. Then the water enters the diffuser bowl immediately above the impeller where the high velocity energy is converted into high pressure. The bowl directs the fluid into the next impeller located immediately above the bowl, and this process will continue through all of the stages of the pump. After leaving the last diffuser bowl, water then passes through a long vertical column pipe as it rises up the well bore toward the surface.
Use of it: Vertical turbine pump is mainly used where submersible pump are not possible to use because the flow is above the range of turbines or the owner prefers a conventional motor that should be mounted at the top of the pump.
They are commonly used in wells that are bored to provide agricultural or turf irrigation or for providing water supply to municipalities that rely on ground water than surface water. The turbine pumps are also used in providing plant make-up water and fire water for industrial plants.
